Thomas James murdered Gwendoline Sweeney 28 who he stabbed and strangled at 4 Kitchen Street, Liverpool on 17 August 1943.

Thomas James had been out drinking with his friend and Gwendoline Sweeney at several pubs including the Eagle Public House, The Kings Arms and the Bush Hotel. Later that night they parted company and the next day Thomas James confessed to his friend that he had killed Gwendoline Sweeney. The friend didnt beleive him at first and so they went to look in the rubble where Gwendoline Sweeney was lying.

After that the friend went home and talked about it with his wife who said he should tell the police.

When the police found Gwendoline Sweeney she had been strangled and had been stabbed in the vagina.

Thomas James  denied all knowledge of the murder but made a mistake in saying that he would stab someone if he were to murder them and not strangle them but no one had mentioned the fact that she was strangled and so he was convicted.
